Sheffield United winger Keith Gillespie was a member of the famous Manchester United youth team that included Giggs, the Nevilles, Scholes and Beckham. He made only nine first team appearances for United. In 1995 he moved to Newcastle in a move that saw Andy Cole move in the opposite direction.
In 1997 while at Newcastle he was involved in a mis-match of a fracas with Alan Shearer outside a Dublin bar. The wide man had aggravated Shearer by throwing bottle tops at him and ended the evening in hospital.
In January 2007 Gillespie was sent off for elbowing Readings Stephen Hunt twelve seconds after that he entered the field as a second half substitute. Gillespie was given the red card without the ball being in play. Reading coach Wally Downes and Sheffield United manager Neil Warnock where also caught up in the melee as Gillespie continued his dispute with Hunt in the tunnel.
Earlier this week on the trip back from a European Championship Qualifier in Iceland Gillespie attacked West Ham full back George McCartney in a dispute over a passport as the two entered the aircraft. Gillespie landed half a dozen punches to McCartney’s head and body before he was restrained by team mates.
