7-10-2000: On this day in 2000 England lose to Germany 1-0 in the last international match to be played at the old Wembley stadium. It was the opening match of the qualification for the 2002 World Cup and Kevin Keegan‘s final match as England manager.
England’s team was: Seaman; G. Neville, Le Saux, Southgate, Keown, Adams; Beckham, Scholes, Barmby; Cole, Owen
German midfielder Dietmar Hamann scored the only goal of the game in the 14th minute.
Keegan was replaced by Sven-Göran Eriksson who lead England to a group win and a place in the finals in Japan and South Korea. On the way to the group win England recorded a historic 5-1 win in Munich and a Beckham free kick in the 93rd minute of the final group game against Greece.
