7-1-1950: Newcastle, Arsenal and England number nine Malcolm Macdonald was born on this day in 1950. Macdonald scored 49 goals in 88 games for Luton before he moved to Newcastle for £180,000 in 1971. He finished top scorer for Newcastle in his five seasons at the club. He scored a hat-trick against Liverpool on his debut for the Magpies. He scored a total of 95 goals in 187 games before he moved back to his home town to complete his career with Arsenal. Also at Arsenal he averaged a goal every other game (42 in 84). Macdonald was capped for England 14 times and scored 6 goals including his famous five goal haul against Cyprus at Wembley 1in 1975.
