Boca Juniors win 2007 Copa Libertadores

This year’s Copa Libertadores – the South American club championship – was won by Argentine club Boca Juniors. Boca Juniors have won the trophy in four of the last eight seasons and have a total of six victories – only fellow Argentine club, Independiente have more victories (seven).

Boca Juniors won the two-legged final against the Brazilian club Grêmio 3-0 (home) and 2-0 (away). Attacking midfielder Juan Román Riquelme – who is on loan from Spanish La Liga club Villarreal – netted both goals in the second leg to bring his total in the tournament to eight. Only Paraguayan striker Salvador Cabañas scored more goals in the tournament – 10 goals for Mexican Club América.

Boca Juniors defeated Colombian Cúcuta Deportivo to reach the final while Grêmio defeated fellow Brazilians Santos.
