A New Season Beckons – Lyon

Lyon who have won the previous six French league titles have changed manager before the 2007-8 season. Alan Perrin has replaced Gerard Houllier at the helm of the French giant.

Lyon came top of their Champions League group last season above Real Madrid but failed to get past the first knock-out stage when they were defeated unexpectedly 0-2 at home against Roma.

Lyon have made three major signings before in the close season:

  • French midfielder Mathieu Bodmer (age: 24) from Lille for €6.5m
  • Italian international defender Fabio Grosso (age: 29) from Inter for €7m
  • International forward Kader Keïta (age: 25) from the Ivory Coast signed from Lille for €18m

The major departures this summer are:

  • French winger Florent Malouda to Chelsea for €21m
  • French midfielder Alou Diarra to Bordeaux for €7.75m
  • French defender Éric Abidal to Barcelona for €15m
  • Portuguese midfielder Tiago Mendes to Juventus for €13m

Lyon have had a positive build up to the new season winning the Peace Cup in Korea by beating English Premier League team Bolton 1-0 in the final thanks to an 86th minute goal by Swedish midfielder Kallstrom. Despite a 1-0 defeat against Reading wins over Argentine River Plate (3-1) and Japanese Shimizu S-Pulse (2-0) gave them a place in the final.

Lyon won Trophée des champions (the French Charity Shield match between winners of league and cup) for the sixth time running when they defeated Sochaux 2-1 in front of a crowd of 30,413 at their home stadium (Stade Gerland). Govou and Cris scored Lyon’s goals.
