Ryan Giggs gave Manchester United the lead in the 35th minute when he fired home a cross from Evra. Chelsea pulled level at the end of the first half when summer signing Florent Malouda held off Rio Ferdinand and placed the ball past United’s keeper Van der Saar.
United had most of the possession in the second half but neither team managed to score on a warm summer afternoon at Wembley. Both John Terry and Didier Drogba where missing from Chelsea’s line up and Joe Cole started the match as Chelsea’s lone striker.
The match was decided by a penalty shootout. Manchester United won 3-0 thanks to three saves by Dutch keeper Edwin van der Saar.
