On This Day – First Penalty Shootout in English Football

5-8-1970: The first penalty shootout in English football decided the Watney Cup semi-final between Manchester United and Hull. Manchester United won the shootout and a place in the final. The first player to take a kick was George Best and the first to miss was Denis Law.

The semi-final played at Hull’s Boothferry Park ground in front of a 34,000 crowd ended 1-1 after that Denis Law scored a late equalizer for Manchester United. United won the penalty shootout 4-3.

Manchester United lost the final 4-1 against Derby County at the Baseball Ground.
