On This Day – CD Tenerife Founded

8-8-1922: CD Tenerife the Spanish football club where founded on this day in 1922. The club currently play at the second level of Spanish football (Segunda División). They finished in 7th place last season. CD Tenerife play in white shirts and blue shorts. They play at the Helodoro R.Lopez stadium which is located in the island’s largest town Santa Cruz. The ground has a capacity of 21,732.

In 1992-93 and 1995-96 the club finished in fifth place in La Liga and qualified for the UEFA Cup. In the 1996-97 UEFA Cup they beat Feyenoord and Lazio on their way to the semi-final where they lost 2-1 against FC Schalke 04.

Recent managers of the club have included the former Spanish national coach Javier Clemente and Liverpool’s current manager Rafael Benitez. Famous former players include Luis García and Roy Makaay.

English football supporter’s who have moved to Tenerife have taken the club to their heart’s and formed a supporter club called Peña Armada Sur (the Southern Army) who follow the club both home and away.
