On This Day – Beckham Scores From his Own Half

17-8-1996: Manchester United’s David Beckham scores from 55 yards against Wimbledon at Selhurst Park on the opening day of the 1996-97 season. Neil Sullivan was the Wimbledon goalkeeper who watched helplessly as Beckham’s strike sailed over his head and into the net. Beckham’s goal came 23 seconds into added time at the end of the game and sealed Uniteds 3-0 victory. The two first goals of the afternoon where scored by Cantona and Irwin.
