The 20 teams in the Argentine Primera Division play two competitions pr year:
- Clausura (February to June) (Closing)
- Apertura (August to December) (Opening)
Each team meets the other teams only once in the competition.
After that the Apertura is completed in December relegation is decided by an averaging system. The two teams with the worst three year average are relegated and the best two teams from the Second Division are promoted. The teams in 17th and 17th postion in the Average table play-off against the 3rd and 4th teams from the Second Division.
Historically the three largest teams have been River Plate (32 championships), Boca Juniors (22) and Independiente (14). All three teams are based in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires.
After five matches of the current Apertura Independiente lead the table with 12 points. Boca Juniors are two points behind. The two top teams met in the previous round of matches. The match was played at Independiente’s 52,823 capacity Estadio Libertadores de América stadium. The home team opened the scoring after two minutes but an own goal in 17th minute levelled the teams. Two goals in the 47th and 68th minute gave Boca a 3-1 lead. Independiente scored the games final goal in the 73th minute. Boca took all three points to reduce Independiente’s lead at the top of the table.
