On This Day – Liverpool Play First League Match

2-9-1893: Liverpool played their first league match on this day in 1893. Liverpool won 2-0 away at Middlesbrough Ironopolis. Liverpool’s first league goal was scored by Malcolm McVean. The Liverpool team was known as the “Team of the all Macs” as seven of the starting eleven where Macs: McOwen, McLean, McQue (scored the second goal in the opening game), McVean and brothers Matt and Hugh McQueen.
