On This Day – First Penalty Scored in the Football League

14-9-1891: On this day in 1891 John Heath of Wolverhampton Wanderers scored the first penalty in a Football League. Wolves went on to win the match against Accrington Stanley 5-0.

William McCrum a mill owner and goalkeeper in the Irish village of Milford in Co Amagh is credited with inventing the penalty kick in 1890. McCrum invented the penalty as a way of reducing the violent defensive play in local matches. McCrum took the idea to the Irish Football Association who presented it to the International Football Board.

On June 2 1891 the penalty kick was added to the laws of the game.
