On This Day – Francesco Totti Born

27-9-1976: Roma favourite Francesco Totti was born on this day in 1976. Totti who was born in Rome has played all his club football for his home town team Roma. He debuted in their first team at the age of 16 and has made 375 appearances since 1993. Totti is a prolific goal scorer from his attacking midfield position. He has scored 158 goals for Roma and is famed for his celebrations.

Roma where Serie A champions in 2001 and runners-up in 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2007. Totti was voted Italian footballer of the year in 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2004. He won the European Golden Boot in 2007 when he scored 26 goals in 36 matches.

Totti has made 58 appearances for Italy and scored 9 goals he was a member of the team that won the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

Totti is also famous for jokes about his lack of intelligence. In 2003 he gave out a book with a collection of these jokes. The proceeds from the book went to the elderly in Rome and a Unicef project in Congo.

Totti goes on holiday. On his return Cafu asks him: ‘Where have you been?’ Totti: ‘I went water skiing’. Cafu: ‘Did you have a good time?’ Totti: ‘Not at all… I didn’t manage to find a lake that went downhill’

Totti’s girlfriend sees that Francesco is getting wet on the terrace and calls out to him: ‘France, come inside, it’s raining.’ Totti: ‘But it’s raining out here as well’
