1-10-1995: On this day in 1995 Manchester United’s French striker Eric Cantona returns to the United team after a ban which was imposed on him after that he kung fu kicked a Crystal Palace supporter on his way from the pitch in January.
United who had won the 1992/93 and 1993/94 titles with Cantona in the team lost the title race to Blackburn in Cantona’s absence.
Cantona returned two months into the 1995/96 season in a Sunday kick-off against Liverpool at Old Trafford. United took an early lead when Butt converted a Cantona cross. Liverpool hit back with two goals by Fowler in the 35th and 55th minute. In the 75th minute Cantona slid the ball to Giggs who was felled by Redknapp to give United a penalty that Cantona slotted home.
United went on to regain the Premier League title. The importance of Cantona was evident in the run in when he scored in four 1-0 wins against Newcastle (away), Arsenal (home), Tottenham (home) and Coventry (home).
As a conclusion to the season Cantona scored the only goal of the 1996 FA Cup final against Liverpool to give United the double.
