13-10-1931: Raymond Kopa the French playmaker from the 1950‘s was born on this day in 1931. Kopa won four French Ligue 1 championships with Stade Reims and two Spanish La Liga chmapioships with Real Madrid where he played together with Puskas. He won the European Cup three times with Real Madrid.
Kopa made 45 appearances for France between 1952 and 1962. He was named Best Young Player of the Tournament in 1954 and Best Player of the Tournament in Sweden in 1958. In 1958 France lost to Pele’s Brazil in the semi-final.
He was nicknamed the French Stanley Mathews and was the leading French player of his era. He was voted the European Footballer of the Year in 1959.
