The two most successful clubs in the history of the Premier League meet in London on Saturday. Here’s a few highlights of their encounters since the Premier League started in 1992.
Manchester United win the first Premier League match between the clubs – a 1-0 win a Highbury in November 1992. Mark Hughes scored the only goal of the game. United went on to win the title while Arsenal finished 11th. Arsenal won both League and FA Cup.
Manchester United become the fourth team of the century to win the double – Preston, Tottenham, Arsenal and Liverpool are the other teams.
Wenger takes over as manager of Arsenal.
Manchester United win the treble of League title, FA Cup and Champions League. Giggs scores the winner in the FA Cup semi-final replay against Arsenal at Villa Park.
Manchester United win 6-1 over Arsenal at Old Trafford. Dwight Yorke scores at hat-trick for United.
Arsenal beat United 4-0 in the 3rd round of the League Cup. The Gunners also win both league matches and take the title after beating United 1-0 at Old Trafford. Wiltord scored for Arsenal.
Arsenal win the title without losing a game. The Old Trafford match ends 0-0. Viera is sent off 10 minutes from time after a tackle on van Nistelrooy. van Nistelrooy misses a penalty in the final minute of the game and is surrounded by Arsenal players after his miss.
United win a new semi-final against Arsenal at Villa Park.
The two clubs meet five times. Arsenal win the Charity Shield in Cardiff 3-1. United win the league game at Old Trafford 2-0 to end Arsenal’s 49 game unbeaten run. The game is now known as Pizzagate after that a slice of pizza hit United manager Ferguson in the tunnel after the match. United win a 5th round match in the League Cup 1-0 and beat the Gunners 4-2 at Highbury in the league. The final encounter between the clubs is the FA Cup Final which ends 0-0. Arsenal win the penalty shoot-out.
Chelsea take the Premier league title, Arsenal are second and United third.
