On This Day – Ron ‘Chopper’ Harris Born

13-11-1944: Ron Harris, Chelsea’s hard-tackling centre-half, was born on this day in 1944. Harris made a club record 795 appearances for Chelsea between 1961 and 1980. He captained the club to victory in the 1970 FA Cup (vs Leeds) and in the Cup Winners’ Cup (vs Real Madrid) the following season.

Harris earned the nickname Chopper for his tough tackling. He played in a period dominated by hard men such as Tommy Smith, Norman Hunter and Dave Mackay.
