On This Day – Jan Molby Scores a Hat-trick of Penalties

26-11-1986: Liverpool’s Danish midfielder Jan Molby scored a hat-trick of penalties against Coventry in a 4th round replay in the League Cup.

Liverpool won the match 3-1 in front of a crowd of 19,179 at Anfield.

Liverpools line-up: Grobbelaar, Gillespie, Beglin, Lawrensen, Whelan, Hansen, Dalglish, Nicol, Rush, Molby, McMahon. Substitutes: Walsh and Wark.

A six year old Steven Gerrard made his first visit to Anfield to watch the match.

Molby netted another penalty in the league encounter between the two clubs three days later. Molby converted 42 of the 45 penalties he took for Liverpool in his twelve years at Anfield.
