On This Day – 83,260 Watch Manchester United vs Arsenal

17-1-1948: On this day in 1948 a Football League record of 83,260 watched Manchester United and Arsenal play at Maine Road. Old Trafford was under re-construction after it had been hit by bombing in March 1941 – the ground re-opened in August 1949.

The matched ended 1-1. Arsenal finished the season as Champions and Manchester United where runners-up. Manchester United won the FA Cup Final defeating Blackpool 4-2.

Maine Road also holds the record for the highest attendance at an English club ground. In 1934 84,569 saw an FA Cup tie between Manchester City and Stoke City.
