On This Day – First Football League Match Played On a Sunday

20-1-1974: Millwall beat Fulham 1-0 at the Den in the first League match to played on a Sunday on this day in 1974.

Twelve matches where played on the day. Millwall vs Fulham started at 11:30 before the other matches.

To get around the law at the time, admission was gained by “Programme Only”. On production of a matchday magazine, the bearer was then sold a team sheet bearing the words “Official Programme”. The first First Division match on a Sunday came a week later when Chelsea met Stoke.
