On This Day – Chris Woods is Finally Beaten

31-1-1987: After 1196 minutes without conceding a goal Chris Woods is finally beaten in Glasgow Rangers’ 0-1 defeat by Hamilton Academicals in the third round of the Scottish Cup. This is a record in British football. The run began on 26th November in 1986 and lasted almost 20 hours (over 13 matches).

Adrian Sprott scored Hamilton’s goal that caused a major cup upset and ended Woods’ run. The following story from The Daily Record gives an account of the match including a not too happy Rangers player manager Graeme Souness.

Woods played for Nottingham Forest, QPR and Norwich City before he joined Terry Butcher, Graham Roberts, Davie Cooper, Ian Durrant and Ally McCoist at Rangers. Woods  won 43 England caps between 1985 and 1993. He started and ended his England career in matches against USA and had 26 clean sheets.
