On This Day – Beckham and Hoddle make England debuts

1-9-1996. On this day in 1996 David Beckham made his England debut in Glenn Hoddle’s first match in charge. The game was a Word Cup Qualifier played in Moldova. England won 3-0 with first half goals by Barmby and Gascoigne. Shearer completed the scoring in the 61st minute.

The England line-up in Moldova was:

Seaman, G Neville, Pearce, Ince, Pallister, Southgate, Beckham, Gascoigne (Batty 81 mins), Shearer, Barmby (Le Tissier 81 mins), Hinchcliffe

England qualified for the 1998 World Cup by topping a group that included Italy, Poland and Georgia in addition to Moldova. Beckham  was famously sent off against Argentina in England’s exit from the Finals that where held in France.
