On this day – Aldridge goes out with a bang

12-9-1989: John Aldridge made his final Liverpool appearance on this day in 1989. Liverpool won the First Division match 9-0 over Crystal Palace at Anfield. Nicol, McMahon and Rush gave Liverpool a 3-0 lead after the first half. Gillespie opened the second half scoring in the 56th minute. Beardsley scored the fifth in 61th minute before he was replaced by Aldridge five minutes later. Within a minute of arriving on the pitch Liverpool where awarded a penalty which Aldridge converted with his first touch of the game. The final three goals of the game where scored by Barnes, Hysen and Nicol.

Geoff Thomas missed a penalty for Palace.

The Liverpool lineup was: Grobbelaar, Hysen, Burrows, Nicol, Whelan, Hansen, Beardsley, Gillespie, Rush, Barnes and McMahon.

Liverpool finished the season as champions nine points ahead of Aston Villa. Kenny Dalglish lead the Reds to the title as player-manager at the age of 39. This was his final season as a player. Crystal Palace avoided the drop finishing in 15th place five points above the relegation zone.
