16-9-1958. On this day in 1958 Everton legend Neville ‘Big Nev‘ Southall was born. Southall made a record 750 appearances between the sticks for Everton between 1981 and 1998. This is over 200 appearances more than number two Brain Labone (534) and number three Dave Watson (528). Southall also holds the record for most caps for Wales with 92 between 1982 and 1998.
Everton where a dominant force both in England and Europe in the mid-1980’s. With Southall in goal the Toffees won:
- 1983-84: FA Cup winners, League Cup finalists
- 1984-85: League Champions, FA Cup finalists, European Cup Winners’ Cup winners
- 1985-86: Runners up in the League
- 1986-87: League Champions
