On This Day – Charles Buchan Born

Charles Buchan's Football Monthly22-9-1891: The Sunderland and Arsenal centre forward Charles Buchan who after his career ended founded the famous football magazine Charles Buchan’s Football Monthly was born on this day in 1891.

Buchan scored 209 league goals in 370 appearances for Sunderland between 1911 and 1925, a club record. He was part of the Sunderland team that won the League in 1912-13 and where Cup finalists in 1913. He concluded his career at Arsenal under Herbert Chapman where he scored 49 in 102 games for Gunners. He also lost a Cup Final for Arsenal in 1927.

The First World War limited Buchan to only six England caps and four goals.

The first issue of Charles Buchan’s Football Monthly was published in September 1951. In it’s heyday in 1967 it had a circulation of 250,000. The magazine continued after Buchan’s death in 1960. The final and 274th issue came out in June 1974.
