Champions League Football Returns to the Lane After 48 Years

Tonight Tottenham meet reigning Dutch champions FC Twente in their first home group match of their Champions League campaign.

The previous match played at White Hart Lane in the Champions League / European Cup was the second leg of the semi-final against Benfica on the 5th April 1962. Spurs trailed 3-1 after the first match. They won the return match 2-1 thanks to goals from Smith and Blanchflower, but Benfica went to the final.

Benfica went on to win the final that was held in Amsterdam 5-3 over Real Madrid. Eusebio scored twice for Benfica, while Puskas scored all three of Reals goals.
