On This Day – First Red Card in English Football

2-10-1976. Blackburn Rovers’ David Wagstaffe was the first player in English football to be sent off with a red card. Later in the afternoon George Best, then at Fulham, was sent off at Southampton for swearing.

British referee Ken Ashton had the  idea of using red and yellow cards under the 1966 World Cup. The system was first used in the 1970 World Cup.
