On This Day – Chris Waddle Makes Newcastle Debut

22-10-1980. Newcastle, Tottenham and England winger Chris Waddle made his Newcastle debut on this day in 1980. Waddle was rescued from non-League football and a job in a sausage factory at the age of 19 when Newcastle signed him from local club Tow Law Town. His first match was in a 1-0 victory over Shrewsbury Town in the Second Division.

Waddle went on to enjoy a successful career both at Tottenham and at French Marseille where he was an influential part of the team that reached the 1991 European Cup final. Waddle won 62 England caps and played in the 1990 World Cup campaign that saw England lose to West Germany in a dramatic semi-final.

A great player, but a terrible singer …
