On This Day – Fabregas Makes Arsenal Debut

23-10-2003. Cesc Fabregas became the youngest player to play for Arsenal when he made his debut in a League Cup tie against Rotherham on this day in 2003. Fabregas was 16 years and 177 days. Arsenal won the third round tie 9-8 on penalties after the match had ended 1-1 after 120 minutes.

The Arsenal line-up was: Stack, Tavlaridis, Clichy, Cygan, Hoyte, Fabregas Soler, Aliadiere, Edu, Thomas, Wiltord, Kanu

Fabregas scored in Arsenal’s 5-1 victory over Wolves in the fourth round. The Gunners defeated WBA 2-0 at the Hawthorns to win a place in the Semi-final. Middlesborough, who went on to win the Cup, proved too strong over the two legs of the semi-final.
