On This Day – Tottenham Score 2,000th First Division Goal

24-10-1962. Tottenham scored their 2,000th First Division goal when they defeated Manchester United 6-2 at White Hart Lane. Medwin (2), Greaves (3) and Jones scored for Spurs, while Herd and Quixall scored for United. The game attracted a crowd of 51,314.

Manchester United line-up: Gregg, Brennan, Cantwell, Stiles, Faulkes, Setters, Giles, Quixall, Herd, Law, Charlton

Tottenham finished runners-up behind Everton i the League, but became the first English club to win a European title when they won the European Cup Winners’ Cup defeating Atletico Madrid 5-1 in Rotterdam.

United won their first title after the Munich Air Disaster when they defeated Leicester City 3-1 in the FA Cup Final.
