On This Day – Jarvis Kenrick Scores First FA Cup Goal

11-11-1871. On this day in 1871 Jarvis Kenrick scored the first goal in the English FA Cup. Kenrick scored the opener in Clapham Rovers’ 3-0 victory over Upton Park. The match was played in front of 1,500 spectators at Upton Parks’ ground West Ham Park.

Clapham Rovers where knocked out in the next round by Wanderers. Wanderers went on to beat the Royal Engineers 1-0 in the first Cup Final. The game was played at Kennington Oval. The teams had contrasting styles of play, Clapham’s play was based around dribbling, while the Engineers employed a then revolutionary passing game.

Kenrick later moved to Wanderers and scored an extra-time winner against Oxford University in the 1877 final. The following year (1878) Kenrick netted twice in Wanderers’ 3-1 victory over the Royal Engineers.
