On This Day – First North London Derby

19-11-1887. On this day in 1887 Tottenham met Arsenal for the first time. Arsenal where at that time called Royal Arsenal and where located in Plumstead. The friendly match was abandoned with 15 minutes remaining due to poor light. Spurs where leading 2-1 at the time.

Royal Arsenal won the return match in February 6-2. Spurs had one nine players available for the game.

Arsenal – at the time Woolwich Arsenal – also won (1-0) the first league match between the teams, that was played in December 1909.

Arsenal have won 61 of the 149 league games between the North London rivals, while Spurs have won 46 and there have been 42 draws.

The 150th derby is to be played tomorrow at the Emirates Stadium.

Update: According to Soccerbase today’s match was the 147th league encounter between the clubs (Arsenal: 60, Tottenham: 47, draws: 40).
