On This Day – Iain Dunn Scores First Golden Goal in British Football

30-11-1994. An Auto Windscreens Shield cup tie between Huddersfield Town and Lincoln City was the first match to be decided by golden goal. The Terriers striker Iain Dunn scored the deciding fifth goal of the evening.  A crowd of 5,738 saw the match.

Dunn, who scored 33 goals in 243 games, was voted Huddersfield Town’s all time cult hero in August 2004.

With the Golden Goal rule a cup tie that enters extra time is decided when a team scores. The rule was used extensively in international competitions between 2000 and 2003. An alternative til Golden Goal is a Silver Goal, if a goal is scored in the first half of extra time the losing team must equalize before the half is completed for the game to continue.
