On This Day – Keane and Vieira Exchange Words in the Tunnel

1-2-2005. On this day in 2005 Arsenal’s Patrick Vieira and Manchester United’s Roy Keane exchange words in the Highbury tunnel prior to the Premier League game. Referee Graham Poll had to calm the two captains before the game.

Keane told Sky Sports after the game:

“I don’t want to go into too much detail but Patrick Vieira is 6ft 4in and having a go at Gary Neville. So I said, ‘have a go at me‘.

If they think Gary Neville’s an easy target, I’m not having it.”

The fireworks continued on the pitch with ten man United winning 4-2 after that Vieira had opened the scoring after 8 minutes of play. Giggs equalized in the 18th minute before Bergkamp gave the Gunners a half time lead. Ronaldo scored two in four minutes to give United the lead. Silvestre was sent off with twenty minutes of the game remaining, but it was United who scored the last goal of the game when John O’Shea netted in the 89th minute.
