Messi Mesmerizes Mourinho

Two moments of magic by Barcelona’s Lionel Messi resulted in a 0-2 victory in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final in Madrid. Messi netted his 51st and 52nd goals of the season and set up a probable final between Barca and Manchester United at Wembley in May.

Messi vs Ronaldo Shoot Out Update

You can find the first part of the story that documents the first 18 league games of the 2010-11 La Liga season and the Messi vs Ronaldo stats her.

The standing after 18 league games was:

  • Messi 18 goals from 15 starts
  • Ronaldo 22 goals from 18 starts

Since then their have been four games:

  1. Messi 0 (18) Ronaldo 0 (22)
  2. Messi 1 (19) Ronaldo 0 (22)
  3. Messi 2 (21) Ronaldo 0 (22)
  4. Messi 3 (24) Ronaldo 2 (24)

All square after 22 games. Notice that Messi has played three games less than Ronaldo.

Messi also tops the assists table with 14 assists, while Ronaldo is in ninth place with 6 assists (today’s game is not included for Ronaldo).

Messi is of course playing in one of Spain’s all-time great teams. Barcelona’s 3-0 victory over Atletico Madrid was their 16th in a row, which broke the previous record of 15 consecutive victories that was achieved by Real Madrid in the 1960-61 season.

Messi and Ronaldo on Fire

Both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi scored hat-tricks in yesterdays La Liga matches. Real Madrid defeated Athletic Bilbao 5-1 at the Bernabeu stadium in Madrid, while Barcelona hammered Almeria 0-8 in South-East Spain.

Messi scored the only goal of the game for Argentina against South American rivals in Doha. While Ronaldo had played for Portugal in their 4-0 victory over World Champions Spain at Benfica’s Estadio da Luz in Lisbon.

Ronaldo has scored two hat-tricks for Real this season. The first came in October when Real won 6-1 against Racing. He has netted 15 times in 12 league matches this season for top placed Real.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Messi has scored in his eight last matches, including international and Champion League games. He has 13 goals in 10 league matches so far this season. Barca are second in the table one point behind Real.

It’s just over a week untilĀ  Ronaldo and Messi meet at the Nou Camp.
